Dear Classmates,
I came across a very popular urban legend that a lot of young males and females still believe today. They say, "A girl can't get pregnant if it is her first time." This is so not true. A lot of older guys would tell a younger more naive person that in order for them not to use protection when having intercourse. The fact is, as long as a female has experienced menarche, she can get pregnant. She might not get pregnant that time, but her body is able to conceive. Menarche is a females first menstrual cycle. I don't how someone could believe this at this day and age, but there are some people out there who still do. I couldn't believe my little sister told me she would have believed it, if I wouldn't have told her otherwise. I first heard this when I was in middle school, and when I asked my mom about it she said that it is not true. I was surprised and confused. Back then I didn't even know what a cycle was, let alone how babies are formed. It was all news to me then, but its elementary to me now. I knew a girl in high school that got pregnant her fist time. I think young women are targeted by this myth because sometimes you encounter one of those guys that does not want to wear a condom. He will find anything to tell you to get you to let him have his way. Trust me, don't. If you have experienced your first menstrual cycle, you can get pregnant having sex for the first time. If you are unsure, ask your healthcare provider, they are always a good source for health information.
Thank you,
Sharon Hollins
P.S. Those cute little girls on the picture are my toddler and my new baby.

I agree with you 100%. I can remember being in middle school, and could not believe it when my friend told me that her mother was expecting a baby. I have no idea how we got on the subject of sex, but she went on to say that her mother did not engage in sex in order to get pregnant; and must I say it totally confused me. I think that parents need to do a better job when talking to their kids about sex and making them aware of the myths that are out there. P.S. your kids are too cute!
ReplyDeleteHello
ReplyDeleteI remeber when I was in elementar my mother told that if I let a boy touch my boob, that I would get pregnant.Silly is it not? My mother embedded that in my head over and over again.Funny part I am 37 and I still feel funny if my boyfriend touches my boobs. What my mother did to me!!
There are many urban legends that spread around and kids that are not educated properly believe them. I remember when I was younger and i would get sick my dad would tell me to quit kissing boys. I was probably about 8 so, I would scrunch my face up and stick out my tongue and say "EWWWW"!! haha. My dad was obviously joking and i always knew he was because i had never kissed a boy!!
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother told me that she use to think that if she kissed a boy she would get pregnant! She didn't find out the truth until my grandfather told her when they started dating.
I remember that lie from high school! Thankfully I knew it wasn't true from health class. But it is sad that guys use this flimsy excuse to not wear protection. With the STD's out there today, why wouldn't they? But, you made a valid point too. It's elemetary now, but back then we didn't know that much either. Great legend to pick!
ReplyDeleteI can remember this myth growing up.All I can do is laugh about it now. Thankfully, I had sex education through my parents so I knew it wasn't true. I was the kid in school who always told everyone that wasn't true. They would get mad at me and would think I didn't know what I was talking about. It is very amusing looking back now and knowing I was right all along.
